Abstract Title: Mörbylånga DWTP, SWEDEN: DIRECT POTABLE REUSE IN COMBINATION WITH BRACKISH WATER DESALINATION

Session Title: Direct and Indirect Potable Reuse

Statement on Research: Living on an island with small amounts of rainfall, the residents of Mörbylånga Municipality in Sweden are well aware that fresh water is a valuable and finite resource. By combining desalination of brackish water with advanced treatment of used process water for drinking water production, the municipality has shown that in Mörbylånga every drop counts.

Bio: For the past ten years Peter Asteberg has been the Project manager of several municipal infrastructure projects, such as drinking water plants, water supply and sewerage projects, and roads. Before that, he worked for many years as a consultant in areas such as sustainability, water supply and road design.

Since 2014 Peter has been employed by Mörbylånga Municipality in south-east Sweden. In 2016 he was assigned to manage a new project involving the planning, design and construction of a combined desalination and water reuse plant in Mörbylånga. The plant, which was commissioned in 2019-2020, is the first full-scale facility ever in Europe for direct potable reuse of water. Therefore, it has received both national and international attention. In 2019 the plant was awarded the Water Reuse Europe Innovation Prize. Peter has also been awarded the 2020 Xylem Water Prize in Sweden.

Peter holds a Master of Science degree in Civil engineering from Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. He is also a Certified Project Manager according to the standards of the International Project Management Association (IPMA).
